Abstract
"Investigation into the Geogrphical Differences in Alkaloid Content of Korean Opium(¥²)"
The studies continued from last year were carried out. We clutivated Papaver somniferum L. in the same way in nine districts over the country for the same purposes as previous years.
We analysed all the collected crude opiums by colorimetric determination.
The followings are summarizations of acomplishments during that period.
1. Alkaloid contents of Korean opium are as follow:
morphine 14.0-20.0%, codeine 3-7%, noscapine 4-8%, thebaine 0.67-1.68%, papaverine 0.81-1.99%.
2. Korean opiums are different from those of foreign ones in their alkaloid contents and especially, the content of morphine and codeine of Korean opium is higher than that of foreign opiums, while the content of papaverine of lower.
3. We see some differences in alkaloid content with the different regional groups and a tendency that the content of morphine form the northern parts is higher than that from the southern parts in Korea.
4. The similar alkaloid ratios between domestic products made it impossible to distinguish each other. But they are so Different from those of foreign ones, especially Indian, Yugoslav. and Turkeyish opium that it is possible to distingush the one from the others.
5. Morphine content of opium collected form tall annual poppies is so low that it is not suitable for opium production.
6. The autumn poppy is healthier than the spring one and produces good opium both in quality and quantity.
7. It is considered Korea is a suitable area for opium production owing to its good climate and soil.
